'The children were screaming': Israeli air strikes continue in Gaza - video

Israel air strikes continued to pummel Gaza overnight. Shells turned the night sky orange as they exploded. One woman in the town of Khan Younis in southern Gaza claimed residents were given no warning before the missiles landed: 'The children were screaming,' she said. On Monday an Israeli tank shell hit the al-Aqsa hospital in the central Gaza Strip

This Palestinian Journalist Was Killed in an Ambulance on Sunday

Khaled Hamad, a 25-year-old Palestinian journalist and videographer, died Sunday inside an ambulance that was struck by an Israeli rocket as he documented the difficult and increasingly life-threatening work of paramedics in the Gaza Strip.
On Twitter, photos of Hamad’s corpse, wrapped in a white, blood-soaked sheet and still bearing a body armor vest with the word PRESS painted across it, are being shared by journalists and activists alike. One image shows Hamad’s father kneeling at his dead son’s feet, weeping.
Hamad’s boss at Continue TV, Alaa Alool, confirmed the journalist’s death Monday afternoon to the Committee to Protect Journalists. VICE reached him on Tuesday.
“Khaled was a wonderful person,” Alool told us. “It is very difficult to find someone with his tenderness, goodness and generosity.”
Hamad left behind a wife, a woman named Hala who is six-months pregnant with the couple’s first child.

Tunnels

http://righteoustrayf.wordpress.com/2014/07/21/tunnels/

by righteoustrayf

Let's talk about tunnels.

Since the latest excuse for the current Israeli assault on Gaza is the tunnels, let's talk about the tunnels.  Let's talk about a population of 1.8 million people in a 140 square mile zone who cannot leave via land, air, or sea.  Let's talk about a place where outsiders are not allowed in.  Let's talk about a place where farmers and fisher folk cannot get their wares outside the perimeters for sale, and strawberries and watermelons rot awaiting passage.  Let's talk about a place where basic goods cannot be brought in; sometimes cloth, sometimes concrete, sometimes medication.  Where fuel is (over)priced and allocated by the very same force that controls the entrances and exits to the territory, allocated at such small amounts that electricity is never available all the time, and during times of acute crisis is only available a few hours a day.  Where my friend, now an American citizen, couldn't enter for his brothers' weddings.  Where the unemployment rate is at 60%, and even government employees have their pay frozen by foreign powers who don't like the current ruling party.

Let's talk about people with sumud (steadfastness), who have lived in this situation for over 60 years, increasingly awful for the last 7.  These people can die, or they can dig.  Tunnels represent a literal underground lifeline for Palestinians.  The light at the end of the tunnel has been used to smuggle goods, livestock, people; my friend did get to the weddings, because he entered through the tunnels.

If you lived in Gaza, would you wither or would you build tunnels?  And when the screws were tightened even further, elevating the usual mostly starvation style of violence into epic bursts of bombing flattening whole neighborhoods and their inhabitants, would the idea of using those tunnels for weaponry cross your mind?  We ask amazing feats of sacrifice from Palestinians, and amazingly, most deliver: we ask that they bear their wrongful imprisonment in silence and peace.  The tunnels are still primarily used for civilian purposes, or would be, if they aren't all destroyed.  So let's talk about tunnels, and why they are there in the first place; then let's talk about destroying the tunnels by opening the fences.

More rockets continue to penetrate Israel's Iron Dome

The Israeli regime’s US-funded missile system has once again proved quite permeable as more Palestinian rockets penetrate the Israeli skies without being intercepted by the so-called Iron Dome.

A volley of rockets fired on Tuesday by the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas activated sirens in the cities of Ashdod, Eshkol, Beer Ganim, Be’er Sheva, Nitzan and Nitzanim.

Several people were reportedly injured as the projectiles caused fire in some cities upon impact.

Hamas has said it will step up its attacks on Israel, using new and more powerful missiles.

Israel-Gaza conflict: Families search for a place of safety from the violence, but the frontline is everywhere in Gaza

A body hung, caught in a white bedsheet, from the fifth floor of what was left of Salam Towers this afternoon. It was of a woman, one of 11 killed when two missiles slammed into the high-rise building in the centre of Gaza City on Monday night. The emergency services were still trying to retrieve the remains without sending huge chunks of the precarious structure crashing down.
“Where do we go now?” Asked Ibithan Shamali, her forehead bandaged from shrapnel in the second attack. “All the [UN] shelters are full, our relations are also without homes now. We shall have to find somewhere to rent; I don't know what will happen if we can't do that.”

Israel Bombs Gaza’s Only Power Plant as Toll Nears 650. Hospitals on the brink of collapse.

Israeli military attacks today include the bombing of Gaza’s sole power plant and the heavy shelling of Khan Younis, killing six people and leaving at least 20 wounded. The Palestinian death toll is near 650, including more than 160 children. More than 4,000 have been wounded.

Right-wing professor: Raping Arab women is ‘the only thing that deters suicide bombers’

A professor and researcher for a right-wing Israeli think tank suggested in an interview earlier this month that raping Arab women was the only way to deter suicide bombers.

After Palestinians allegedly abducted and killed three Israeli teens in late June, Bar-Ilan University professor Dr. Mordechai Kedar spoke with a Hebrew-language radio show about what could be done to stop Hamas.

“I’m not talking about what we should or shouldn’t do,” Kedar insisted. “I’m talking about the facts. The only thing that deters a suicide bomber is the knowledge that if he pulls the trigger or blows himself up, his sister will be raped.”

“That’s all. That’s the only thing that will bring him back home, in order to preserve his sister’s honor.”

Webmaster's Commentary: To even make this suggestion indicates that this man is acutely mentally ill.

For an alleged academic to make such a case indicates that he has absolutely zero understanding of the human condition.

When people are marginalized, many times literally to the point of death, they get angry. When people are denied basic human rights, they get angry. When people see their children hauled off to jail, and physically and emotionally abused, in order to obtain "confessions" against family and friendds, they get angry. When they see friends and loved ones denied medical treatment, simply because they are Palestinians, they get angry. When they get evicted from housing where their families have lived for generations, and there is literally no place else to go, they get angry.

And when there is no place for redress, or a rational hearing of grievances, that anger boils over into violence.

As a Christian pacifist who abhors violence, I view Israel, in the 21st century, as a wretchedly xenophobic, self proclaimed theocracy, with nuclear weapons.

The continuing slaughter of Palestinians in Gaza, an overwhelming majority of whom are civilians, is simply an ongoing expression of this mindset, and I am certain that Dr. Kedar rejoices, in his heart of hearts, upon hearing how many women and children the IDF have murdered, to date.

·         Israeli rabbi: Kill civilians in Gaza

Dov Lior, an Israeli rabbi from the illegal settlement of Kiryat Arba in the occupied West Bank, said in the ruling that it is “okay” to kill innocent civilians and destroy Gaza.

The ruling also says that it is not necessary to check if the people targeted are civilians or non-civilians.

The rabbi’s ruling authorizes all means of targeting the people, such as “denying supplies or electricity.” He further says military forces are allowed “to bomb the whole area according to the discretion of the army...”

In the case of Gaza,” the rabbi said, the Israeli military officials “will be allowed to instruct even the destruction of Gaza.”

He also said that, as the Israeli army is at war with the people in the blockaded enclave, any kind of talk about humanism and consideration are moot.”

The rabbi has been chosen by thousands of Israelis, who follow him.

·         Give Israelis Nobel Peace Prize!’

The Nobel Peace Prize should be given to Israeli forces for their "unimaginable restraint" in their offensive against the blockaded Gaza Strip, says the Israeli envoy to the United States.

Israeli ambassador Ron Dermer made the appalling remarks at a pro-Israeli event in Washington on Tuesday.

The Israeli forces “should be given the Nobel Peace Prize... a Nobel Peace Prize for fighting with unimaginable restraint," Dermer said, claiming the Israeli soldiers do not “target a single Palestinian civilian.”

"Our soldiers are dying so that innocent Palestinians can live,” he said, censuring Human Rights Watch for its criticism of the Israeli aggression.

At a different event in Tal Aviv, UN chief Ban Ki-moon extended his condolences to the Israeli regime for its losses during the offensive against the besieged sliver, which has so far left more than 630 dead, mostly civilians.

According to Palestinian medical workers, more than 160 Gazan children have been among the dead.

Earlier in the day, Juliette Touma, a spokesperson for the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), put child fatalities from the 15-day offensive at 121, adding that more than 900 Palestinian children were also injured.

CAMPAIGNERS accused the government yesterday of profiting from the latest slaughter in Gaza by selling British weapons to Israel in multimillion-pound arms deals.

Flogging arms and components to Israel has been regarded as a reliable cash cow by British officials for a long time, said Campaign Against Arms Trade (CAAT).

How Obama Is A Direct Accomplice To Israeli War Crimes
By Shamus Cooke

22 July, 2014
Countercurrents.org
To assist in a crime makes one a criminal by any legal standard. And the biggest crimes of all are war crimes, since they kill en masse and showcase the cruelest form of human behavior.

The fact that Israel is actively committing war crimes in the Gaza Strip is not open to debate, since a cursory glance at the conflict obviously exposes them in practice.

The two most glaring war crimes Israel is committing — as defined by the Geneva Convention — are the concepts of “collective punishment” and “necessity and proportionality.”

Under collective punishment, a warring party cannot respond to an attack by waging war on the attacker’s community, as is clearly happening in Gaza. The clearest proof that collective punishment is being used is that a 1,000 Gaza homes have been destroyed and the majority of the casualties are civilians.

Under “necessity and proportionality” a warring party must only use the amount of force necessary to defeat the opponent; disproportional force is a crime. So, for example, if Hamas fires wimpy rockets that kill virtually no Israelis, then it is “disproportionate” for Israel to rain massive bombs, missiles, and artillery to reduce large sections of Gaza to rubble. Even Britain’s Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg called the Israel attack a “deliberately disproportionate form of collective punishment.”

It is also a specific war crime to deliberately attack civilians, and especially to attack facilities treating the wounded. But Israel has attacked al-Aqsa hospital in Gaza four times, according to Reuters. The latest shelling of al-Aqsa killed 4 and wounded 70.

Even the pro-western Human Rights Watch has denounced Israel for committing war crimes:

"Israeli air attacks in Gaza investigated by Human Rights Watch have been targeting apparent civilian structures and killing civilians in violation of the laws of war."

Obama’s aiding and abetting Israeli war crimes is also closed to debate, since his administration stands guilty from the very beginning of the conflict by shielding Israel from international political pressure, hiding its war crimes by deliberate misrepresenting what is happening, and giving political space for the war to continue by not intervening directly.

It was a blatantly laughable lie when Obama said that his government was “using all means” to achieve a ceasefire early in the conflict.

The U.S. influence over Israel is tremendous, and Obama could have ended the conflict in the first hour by simply declaring, “If Israel does not stop its attack on Gaza, the U.S. will refuse further military and financial assistance and sever all diplomatic and political ties.” War over.

Instead of taking this action, or any action for that matter, Obama sat on the sidelines. In fact, Obama deliberately waited until the end of the second week of the war to even send his Secretary of State, John Kerry, to broker a ceasefire deal. Of course, Obama could have come himself.

Obama further assisted in Israeli war crimes by repeatedly justifying Israel’s right to commit them, deceitfully placing all Israel’s actions under the big umbrella of “self-defense.” Again, war crimes are war crimes, and were purposefully created to trump any excuse of self-defense.

After ten days of a brutal bombing campaign an Israeli ground invasion was announced, which everyone knew would intensify the bloodshed. This would have been a key moment for the U.S. government to finally intervene. But instead, as ABC News reports:

“President Barack Obama said Friday that he encouraged Israel's leader to minimize civilian deaths in its ground push into Hamas-ruled Gaza, while letting him know that the U.S. supports Israel's right to self defense.”

A statement like this can be interpreted to mean only one thing: a green light to continue the massacre.

When John Kerry was finally sent to the Middle East to broker a peace deal, he was still making excuses for Israeli’s war crimes. USA Today reports:

“Kerry also blamed the latest wave of violence on what he called Israel's "legitimate" efforts to pursue and punish those who last month kidnapped and killed three Israeli teenagers whose bodies were found in the West Bank.”

Again, bombing a whole city because three Israeli teens were killed is disproportional collective punishment — war crimes. There is also no evidence that Hamas is responsible for the death of three Israeli teens, which it has denied since day one.

The colossally disproportionate aspect of the war has been continually smoothed over by the Obama administration, which consistently lumps Palestinian and Israeli civilian deaths evenly together, as if they were happening with equal frequency. But in reality the 550 Palestinians that have been killed and 3,500 wounded are mostly civilians, while the few dozen Israeli’s who’ve died have been mostly soldiers.

How dangerous are the Hamas rockets that the Obama administration endlessly talks about? CBS news recently reported:

“Hamas also fired 50 more rockets at Israel, including two at Tel Aviv, causing no injuries or damage.”

This has been the story of the conflict which Obama has justified the complete destruction of the Gaza Strip by continually saying "no nation should accept rockets being fired into its borders.”

Obama’s muted language about Israel’s aggression can be compared to the recently shot down Malaysian jet, for which Obama summoned his “outrage” while instantly blaming the pro-Russian Ukrainians, though without a shred of evidence.

Most of the world believes Israel’s actions are outrageous, an opinion not allowed to be expressed at the United Nations, thanks again to the Obama administration, which used its clout to sterilize Israel’s actions by limiting the UN’s statement on the conflict.

Specifically, the Obama administration used its influence over the UN Security Council to limit its statement to “serious concern” about civilian casualties on “both sides” of the conflict, thus white washing the nature of events and providing the aggressor with invaluable political breathing space.

The Obama administration has also assisted Israeli War Crimes by continually blaming Hamas for not agreeing to the Egyptian brokered ceasefire agreement. Hamas is the elected government of the Gaza Strip, and thus has a right to not agree to a ceasefire agreement. But of course Hamas’ not agreeing to the Egyptian agreement does not justify a continual Israeli blitzkrieg of the Gaza Strip, though the Obama administration’s logic implies exactly this.

Lastly, the Obama administration has consistently lied about the origins of this bloodbath. The three dead Israeli teens were not the cause of this conflict, but the pretext, which the Israeli government consciously exploited to promote war among the Israeli population.

The real cause of the war was the recent alliance between the Palestinian Authority — which governs the West Bank — and Hamas, which governs the Gaza Strip. This alliance gave the Palestinians their strongest hand in bargaining with Israel in perhaps decades, which was enough to spark a new round of massacres from the Israeli government in an effort to re-balance the bargaining table.

This ongoing bloody dynamic continues in large part because the U.S. government allows it. The vast majority of people across the world are denouncing Israel’s war crimes against the Palestinians, and so too must U.S. citizens denounce their government’s criminal actions in assisting Israeli war crimes.

·         I’d fire rockets at Israel: British MP

A British lawmaker says he would fire rockets into Israel if he lived in the besieged Gaza Strip, which has faced a deadly Israeli offensive for over two weeks.

“The big question is - if I lived in Gaza would I fire a rocket? - probably yes,” Liberal Democrat member of parliament David Ward said in a message posted on Twitter on Tuesday.

He added in a follow-up message that the West should “make up its mind - which side is it on?”

The comments drew criticism from the Liberal Democrats, with some on social media calling on party leader Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg to suspend Ward from the party.

“We utterly condemn David Ward’s comments, they are not representative of the Liberal Democrats,” the party also said in a statement, adding that it would take the matter “very seriously and will treat it as a disciplinary issue.”

Last July, Ward was suspended from his party for making anti-Israeli remarks.

“There will be a ceasefire, then there will be a period of calm,” he said in an interview with BBC Radio Leeds about the latest Israeli onslaught on Gaza, adding, “But during that period of calm when hopefully people are not being murdered, there will still be Palestinians who are being shot by the Israeli forces, they will still be beaten up, there will still be child detentions, that to the Israelis is peace.”

Hamas warheads aren’t easy to blow up in midair. The explosive used—TNT—is fairly inert and encased in a thick steel tube. The Tamir interceptors are supposed to blow up when they get close to the rockets and shred them with small steel rods. But the rods spray in all directions, so most don’t even touch the rocket. Many of those that hit may deflect off. The rods don’t have much chance if the timing or direction of the interceptor is even slightly off, according to Lloyd’s calculations.

If Iron Dome isn’t effective, then why have so few Israelis died from rocket fire? Both Lloyd and Postol attribute that mainly to the low firepower of the rockets and to Israel’s excellent early-warning system and network of shelters.

Michael Bloomberg flies to Israel in defiance of flight ban

US billionaire Michael Bloomberg announced Tuesday he was jetting into Tel Aviv to show solidarity with Israel, calling for a US flight ban to be lifted immediately.

The move from the former mayor of New York, a city of eight million with the largest Jewish population in the US, puts him at odds with the US government that backed the ban to protect US citizens from possible Hamas rocket attacks.
