History Repeats Itself: USA & Turkey vs. Syria & Russia

It’s ironic how history has a bad habit of repeating itself, maybe because we humans are not creative enough, or some of us, or maybe we are too lazy to invent new issues that will might help make our lives more better or at least less predictable. Some learn from history lessons, others tend to commit the same mistakes again.

Damascus to give preference to Russian companies in economic projects — foreign minister

Syrian authorities expect Russian companies to participate in development of oil fields in Syria, the country’s Foreign Affairs Minister Walid Muallem at a meeting with Russia’s Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin. Muallem said a decision has been taken "to give preference to Russian companies in economic projects in Syria, especially in construction and revival of the country and oil production." "We have information that offshore oil and gas fields off the Syrian coast have huge potential," the minister added. He also said one Russian company has already signed a respective contract, and Syrian authorities expect that "other companies will follow suit as we’re ready to grant any benefits to Russian companies." "Hopefully, not only Russian war-craft but also oil platforms will be present off the Syrian coasts," the minister said.

Syrian Army Fired Upon by Mortars From Turkish Territory - Spokesman

Turkey fired a number of mortar bombs toward Syrian army positions, the Syrian army spokesman said Saturday.

"Last night, there was intense mortar fire on Syrian government forces' positions fire from the Mount Jebel Aqra area, which is on the Turkish side," Brigadier General Ali Mayhoub said during a press briefing.

"Commander-in-chief of the Syrian Arab Army [President Bashar Assad] warns of the dangers of such behavior," the spokesman added.

The Syrian general also accused Turkey of increasing arms supplies to Syrian rebels.

Russia ready to coordinate steps to block Turkish-Syrian border — FM

Russia is ready to coordinate practical steps to block the Turkish-Syrian border in cooperation with Damascus, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Friday after talks with Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallem.
Lavrov recalled that French President Francois Hollande earlier voiced the proposal to adopt specific measures to block the Turkish-Syrian border.
"We actively support that. We are open for coordination of practical steps, certainly, in interaction with the Syrian government," he said. "We are convinced that by blocking the border we will in many respects solve the tasks to eradicate terrorism on Syrian soil."
"We hope that initiative by President Hollande will be implemented within the framework of our joint work, including in the Group of Support for Syria," the minister said.

US Secretary of State John Kerry should check out reports on the involvement of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s son in illegal oil trade with the Islamic State (IS) terrorist group, Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallem said on Friday. "I’d like to mention rumors that Erdogan’s son could be involved in illegal oil trade with the IS, although there are no proofs. If I was in Kerry’s place, I’d make an attempt to shed light on these reports," Muallem said commenting on Kerry’s statements that Damascus was buying oil from terrorists.

Syrian Foreign Minister Muallem is being way too kind here. As reported today at zerohedge.com:

Over the course of the last four or so weeks, the media has paid quite a bit of attention to Islamic State’s lucrative trade in “stolen” crude. On November 16, in a highly publicized effort, US warplanes destroyed 116 ISIS oil trucks in Syria. 45 minutes prior, leaflets were dropped advising drivers (who Washington is absolutely sure are not ISIS members themselves) to “get out of [their] trucks and run away.” The peculiar thing about the US strikes is that it took The Pentagon nearly 14 months to figure out that the most effective way to cripple Islamic State’s oil trade is to bomb... the oil. Prior to November, the US “strategy” revolved around bombing the group’s oil infrastructure. As it turns out, that strategy was minimally effective at best and it’s not entirely clear that an effort was made to inform The White House, Congress, and/or the public about just how little damage the airstrikes were actually inflicting. There are two possible explanations as to why Centcom may have sought to make it sound as though the campaign was going better than it actually was, i) national intelligence director James Clapper pulled a Dick Cheney and pressured Maj. Gen. Steven Grove into delivering upbeat assessments, or ii) The Pentagon and the CIA were content with ineffectual bombing runs because intelligence officials were keen on keeping Islamic State’s oil revenue flowing so the group could continue to operate as a major destabilizing element vis-a-vis the Assad regime. Ultimately, Russia cried foul at the perceived ease with which ISIS transported its illegal oil and once it became clear that Moscow was set to hit the group’s oil convoys, the US was left with virtually no choice but to go along for the ride. Washington’s warplanes destroyed another 280 trucks earlier this week. Russia claims to have vaporized more than 1,000 transport vehicles in November. Of course the most intriguing questions when it comes to Islamic State’s $400 million+ per year oil business, are: where does this oil end up and who is facilitating delivery? In an effort to begin answering those questions we wrote: The Most Important Question About ISIS That Nobody Is Asking Meet The Man Who Funds ISIS: Bilal Erdogan, The Son Of Turkey's President Turkey's role in facilitating the sale of Islamic State oil has been the subject of some debate for quite a while. From "NATO is harbouring the Islamic State: Why France’s brave new war on ISIS is a sick joke, and an insult to the victims of the Paris attacks", by Nafeez Ahmed: "Turkey has played a key role in facilitating the life-blood of ISIS’ expansion: black market oil sales. Senior political and intelligence sources in Turkey and Iraq confirm that Turkish authorities have actively facilitated ISIS oil sales through the country. Last summer, Mehmet Ali Ediboglu, an MP from the main opposition, the Republican People’s Party, estimated the quantity of ISIS oil sales in Turkey at about $800 million—that was over a year ago. By now, this implies that Turkey has facilitated over $1 billion worth of black market ISIS oil sales to date."

Breaking: Russian Pilot Rescued by Iran’s General Soleimani

Soleimani promised them to return the Russian pilot safe and sound; a promise that was kept in the end, according to the Syrian officer.

After tracing the place of the Russian pilot using his GPS, it was revealed that the pilot was being kept in a place 6km behind the frontline of the clashes between the Syrian army and the opposition.

Six fighters of Hezbollah’s special operation unit and 18 Syrian commandos approached the frontline to carry out the operations and the Russian air force and helicopters concurrently created hellfire in the region and destroyed the terrorists’ headquarters in a way that most of the enemy forces deployed in the region fled the scene and the ground was paved for the special unit’s advance.

The Syrian officer added that every move of the special units was monitored and covered precisely by the Russian satellites in a way that the slightest moves made 100 meters away from the area of operation was reported to them and every moment of the operation was reported to a very high-raking official in the Kremlin (that he thinks was president Putin) and it was clear that he was monitoring the entire operations through satellites from Moscow.

Saudis to execute 55 citizens, Alkhalifa revoke citizenship of more natives

Saudi media have reported that more than 50 citizens would be executed soon, having been condemned on various charges. They possibly include Sheikh Nimr AlNimr, his nephew, Ali AlNimr and five other Shia Muslims who had protested peacefully against AlSaud tribal rule. There is now urgent need for pressure on the Saudis to spare the lives of those condemned to death for calling on the regime to reform. Washington and London are urged to make a noble stand to stop these executions and force Saudis to behave decently with citizens or pack and go. Meanwhile a Saudi court has sentenced a citizen to jail term and lashing on a strange charge. Mukhlif Al Shummari, 60, has been sentenced to two years jail and 200 lashes for “socialising with the Shia and sympathising with them in their tragedies”. He is known for communicating and co-habiting with the Shia Muslims of the Eastern Province. He has shrugged off the sentence and vowed to continue his relations with all sectors of the Saudi society.

The New York-based Human Rights Watch (HRW) has issued an extensive report on Bahrain titled "The Blood of People Who Don't Cooperate" detailing the systematic torture inflicted on native Bahrainis by the ruling Alkhalifa tribe. It said that security forces are torturing detainees during interrogation as regulatory bodies set up after the 2011 uprising "lack independence" and officials are not held accountable. In its 84-page report, HRW said it interviewed 10 detainees "who said they endured coercive interrogations" by authorities. It cited four other inmates of Jaw prison "who said authorities had tortured them in March 2015", four years since reforms that were announced after the initial revolt was crushed. Reported physical assaults include "being subjected to electric shocks; suspension in painful positions, including by their wrists while handcuffed; forced standing; extreme cold; and sexual abuse," HRW said.  In the wake o f the Human Rights Report Lord Avebury, the Vice-Chairman of the Parliamentary Human Rights Group tabled a question “To ask Her Majesty’s Government what is their response to the recommendations by Human Rights Watch in its report on the treatment of detainees in Bahrain, The Blood of People Who Don't Cooperate, that the UK should suspend funding, support and training for security service reform until Bahrain enacts listed reforms and issues a standing invitation to the UN Special Rapporteur on Torture.”

On 23rd November Alkhalifa court issued sentences totalling 429 years against 36 native Bahrainis and revoked the citizenship of 13 of them. Three were sentenced to 15 years jail, ten others to 10 years each. In another case, sixteen native citizens were given 15 years and three sentenced to ten years. Thirteen of these had their nationality revoked also. In a third case the same court sentenced one person to five years and three others were given three years each. On 19th November Alkhalifa court sentenced six Bahrainis from Jihafs Town to 15 years jail sentence for taking part in anti-regime protests. On 23rd November Photojournalist Sayed Ahmed AlMousawi and his brother, Sayed Mohammed have been sentenced to 10 years imprisonment for doing their job. Reporters Without Borders issued a statement condemning the sentence: “The threats and intimidation campaigns against professional journalists and citizen journalists have just one aim – to use ‘terrorism’ as a pretext for suppressing all criticism of an authoritarian regime,” said Alexandra El Khazen, the head of the Reporters Without Borders Middle East desk. It added: “It is outrageous that a journalist has been treated like a terrorist. Arbitrary arrests of peaceful dissidents, systematic torture and impunity have turned Bahrain into a dangerous country for those who speak out. We condemn Mousawi’s arbitrary detention and call on the authorities to overturn his conviction.”

Arbitrary detention has continued. On 22nd November Hussain Abdulla AlShehabi and Mohammad Al Fatlawi, from Duraz,  were arrested and taken to be tortured at secret houses. On 21st November Sheikh Fadhel Ibrahim was detained. On 23rd November, a blind native Bahraini was arrested at Bahrain airport on his way to attend religious rituals in Iraq. Ali Sa’ad, 30, has been repeatedly detained despite his blindness caused by suspicious explosion in a the car he was sharing with a friend who died.

On Friday 20th November human rights activists launched a campaign in defence of the children who are languishing at Alkahlifa jails. AlWahdwi Human Rights Monitor said that more than 340 children (under 18) are behind bars. Around 100 of them are under 15. Many of them are denied basic medical treatment. It urged UNICEF to intervene to get these children released to stop their torture and let them attend school.

On 19 November 2015, 80 Members of the European Parliament addressed an open letter to Bahrain’s King, His Majesty Hamad Bin Isa Al-Khalifa, on the ongoing travel ban against Bahraini Human Rights Defender Nabeel Rajab, and asked for the charges against him to be dropped.
