In mid-June, a battle raged for the port city of Mariupol, Ukraine. A new militia force launched an offensive against about 250 Russian militiamen loyal to the Donetsk People’s Republic, which had seized the city from the Ukrainian government. The battle focused on a police station held by the separatists in which both armed militants and unarmed civilians had gathered to demand reunion with Russia. The conflict ended cruelly, as the station was burned to the ground with scores of women and children inside. Those fleeing the inferno were machine-gunned.

Gen. Dempsey: We're Pulling Out Our Cold War Military Plans over Ukraine

Hours after the U.S. State Department on Thursday claimed (though failed to describe) new evidence that Russia's military was both increasing the flow of arms to rebel fighters in eastern Ukraine and firing artillery at Ukrainian Army positions across its border, Chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Martin Dempsey elevated the rhetoric against Russian President Vladimir Putin and directly invoked the idea that a new Cold War-like posture is now being taken by the U.S. military.

Speaking from the Aspen Security Forum, a defense industry conference in Colorado, Dempsey said Pentagon planners are now looking at military options “we haven’t had to look at for 20 years" and warned that Putin—whom he characterized as escalating the crisis inside Ukraine—“may actually light a fire” he cannot control. And not just in Ukraine or eastern Europe, Dempsey said, but globally.

Memo to Joint Chiefs of Staff General Dempsey: sir, forgive me, but in the eyes of history, this is going to prove to be your "yellowcake uranium moment", as when Colin Powell addressed the UN with the accusation that Saddam Hussein was creating weapons of mass destruction.

And since that moment, sir, I have never, ever been able to take anything this government says, no matter which political party is in charge, seriously. In fact, the US government, at this point in its history (dare we say, devolution?!?) is simply a collection of individuals who take the money of large corporations which fund election cycles, and keep them happy. NATO’s Europe commander advocates stockpiling a base in Poland with enough weapons, ammunition and other supplies to support a rapid deployment of thousands of troops against Russia, British media reported.

General Philip Breedlove’s idea would be presented to members of the alliance at the upcoming NATO summit in Wales in September, according to The Times.

US Invents Reports of Russia Attacking Ukraine Bases

State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf introduced the story to the press at today’s briefing, claiming that the US has secret evidence from “human intelligence information” that the attacks are taking place. The Pentagon concurred, saying such attacks have been going on “for several days.”

During the past several days, there has not been a single report out of Ukraine of an artillery strike against any of their military bases, anywhere in the country. The last such incident was two weeks ago, when rebels fired a BM-21 grad at a military base.

And this is Ukraine we’re talking about, which comes up with its own dubious stories of Russian attacks on a near daily basis. If Russia was carried out concerted shelling against Ukrainian military targets, Ukraine would be harping on about it constantly. They aren’t even alleging anything close to that is happening.

In Bloomberg's article, "Two Ukrainian Jets Shot Down, Three Dangerous Explanations," it claims two Ukrainian SU-25 ground attack warplanes were shot down by rebels over Donetsk in eastern Ukraine, stating:

"Ukrainian Defense Ministry spokesman told reporters in Kiev that two of its Sukhoi SU-25 fighter jets were shot down while flying at 5,200 meters (17,000 feet) over the Donetsk region in eastern Ukraine. The pilots ejected, and their whereabouts are unknown."

"At 17,000 feet, the planes would have been outside the range of the shoulder-fired missiles that the rebels contend are their only air-defense weapons. The planes would, however, be in range of a surface-to-air missile such as the Buk, which is suspected to have been used to shoot down Malaysian Airlines flight MH-17 on July 17."
