Al-Islam and Suicide

Suicide is strictly forbidden in Al-Islam. From the Islamic perspective ALLAH is the author of life and it is only He who could take life or tell human beings what conditions a life should be taken under. As human beings we don't own our lives, ALLAH does.  As such we don't have the authority to take it. Suicide is disrespecting ALLAH and being ungrateful for the life He has given us. Today we are led to believe that while Islam strongly condemns suicide, somehow Muslims have become the best promoters of it. As a result of conflicts in Muslim countries, suddenly we have suicidal Muslims rising up all over the world in absolute disobedience to the teachings in their religion. Oddly enough in Iraq, Israel, India and other countries, non-Muslim perpetrators were caught faking suicide bombings to be blamed on Muslims. So what does the Qur’an and Hadiths say about suicide and what has been the example of Muslims throughout history regarding using suicide as a technique in war? Are Muslims really responsible for all the suicide bombings that the media is blaming them for? This section will address these questions and many more.

Question/Criticism:

Muslims believe in suicide. They have always used it as a technique in war.

Answer:

It is He Who giveth life
and who taketh it,
and to Him shall ye
all be brought back.[10:56]

Suicide is strictly forbidden along with the killing of innocents in Islam. G'd is the author of life and it is only He who could take life or tell human beings under what conditions a life should be taken such as in punishment for murder and spreading destruction and havoc in the land. As human beings we don't own our lives, G'd does! As such we don't have the authority to take it. Suicide is disrespecting G'd and being ungrateful for the life He has given us. G'd has made life sacred for human beings and all his creatures. There are many verses that describe the sacredness of life in the Qur’an. One of the verses is as follows:

Say: "Come, I will rehearse what G'd hath (really) prohibited you from": Join not anything as equal with Him; be good to your parents; kill not your children on a plea of want;- We provide sustenance for you and for them;- come not nigh to shameful deeds. Whether open or secret; take not life, which G'd hath made sacred, except by way of justice and law: thus doth He command you, that ye may learn wisdom. Qur'an (6:151)

The Myth of the Suicide Bomber

Why "Suicide Bombing" Must be a Myth and What Purposes it Really Serves

After reading The Logic of Suicide Terrorism--It’s the Occupation, Not the Fundamentalism by Robert Pape, the main idea that we come away with is that suicide bombers are real, very real indeed. Though we were promised a revelation of the logic, these questions remain:

If the purpose of a suicide-terrorist attack is not to die, but to kill and to inflict the maximum number of casualties on the target society, why do they die?

If the purpose of the suicide bomber is to end the occupation of his country, why is the suicide tactic not as old as war and territorial occupation itself?
