It is really quite simple, Pat. back in 2012, the US "intervened" in Yemen to kick out the legitimate government of Yemen that wanted to rule Yemen for the benefit of Yemen and installed a US puppet that ruled Yemen for the benefit of American corporations. This is something the US has attempted against the governments of more than fifty other nations since the end of WW2, succeeding about half the time. The successes include Cuba in 1952, Iran in 1953, Chile in 1973, and Egypt in 2013. Obama bragged about the Yemen success in 2012! But the old model is starting to fall apart. The US plan of covert overthrow only works when the people of a nation follow the new Junta as they followed the previous leaders. But that has started to break down. The people of Cuba kicked out their US puppet in 1959. Iran kicked out their US puppet, the Shah, in 1979. The people of Eastern Ukraine responded to the US backed coup in Kiev by simply breaking off and trying to go their own way.

so now in Yemen, their people are tired of the US puppet Hadi and want their own President Saleh back. The American Empire, alarmed at how the pesky conquered provinces are refusing to stay conquered, is going to make an example of Yemen, one of the poorest nations in the Middle East, that you accept and love your US puppet rules or bad things will happen to you such as starvation blockades and the bombing of civilians and civilian infrastructure.

And in their eagerness to conform to the general theme of an Iran vs. US-Saudi proxy war in Yemen, the media’s treatment of alleged Iranian arms to the Houthis has ignored the fact that the Houthis had forged an alliance by early 2014 with a far larger source of arms: former President Ali Abdullah Saleh. It was that alliance that propelled the Houthis into power last September, not their ties with Iran.

After Saleh was forced to step down as president in 2012, the government supposedly reorganized the military and Saleh’s son Ahmed Ali Saleh was ousted as commander of the Republican Guard. But in fact Saleh continued to control the military through his allies in most of the command positions. When the Houthi advanced on Sanaa last September, it was all carefully choreographed by Saleh. The Houthis were able to take one Yemeni military facility after another without a fight and enter the capital easily.

It turned out that the warship was being sent primarily to symbolise US support for the Saudis, and the Pentagon made no mention of Iranian arms when it announced the move. But the story of the US navy intercepting Iranian arms was irresistible, because it fit so neatly into the larger theme of Iran arming and training the Houthis as its proxy military force in Yemen

Press TV: How much change would a new envoy bring to the situation in Yemen?

Ford: A new envoy is not a magical solution. I think the envoy will do quite little so long as Saudi Arabia continues the aggressive bombing campaign. Over the last month, they have bombed all over Yemen, they have been targeting hospitals, schools, refugee centers, soccer stadiums, urban cities. The destruction has been quite devastating and only an end to Saudi Arabia’s aggression is the thing that can actually bring some peace and a potential for the return of stability in the region. 

Press TV: What legal action can Yemen take against Saudi Arabia, considering the fact that Saudi Arabia launched this war on Yemen without a UN mandate?

Ford: That is a good question and the Houthis have said that they will more directly retaliate against Saudi Arabia. And they are completely within their rights to drive them out of the country by whatever means necessary, as you said they did not seek UN approval. The war is completely illegal. However, given the notion of legal war provided by the UN historically has been generally in the service of US imperialism and its allies in the region. So, we have, for example, never seen any leader who has been friendly with the US brought to the International Criminal Court. It is always only those leaders of movements, of countries and states that are in opposition to the US and so, I do not think some sort of juridical appeals will be most fruitful, but I think that popular international pressure for Saudi Arabia to end the aggression is growing and ultimately that will be decisive.

Israeli Air Force Chief Confident He Can ‘Get Job Done’ Attacking Iran

Last week’s announcement by the Russian government that they are cancelling a ban on selling S-300 defensive missiles to Iran seems to be sparking a flurry of comments from US and Israeli officials insisting they can attack Iran whenever they want, with or without the S-300.

Yesterday it was President Obama, but today was Israeli Air Force commander Major General Amir Eshel’s turn, insisting he is confident he can “get the job done” if ordered to attack Iran.

Eshel confirmed the S-300 is a “very sophisticated system,” but said he had no doubts that Israel, which had invested “immense resources” in preparing to attack Iran, could get around it in a strike.

It is extremely regrettable that Israel has invested "...immense resources into preparing to attack Iran...", rather than investing those resources in figuring out how to live with an Iran using nuclear energy for power.

I would like to politely suggest to Major General Eshel that an attack against Iran would be the most ham-fistedly, pig-headedly wrong move the Israeli government and military could make right now, just as the technical framework for a nuclear deal has been established, and the P5+1 is working to agree on the technical ramifications of how this agreement is going to work.

I would like to suggest that the US government may well decide NOT to participate against such a strike, as Obama has committed himself to the potential success of such a deal, but Russia may very well, ultimately, join the fray on the side of Iran.

Hezbollah could attack Israel from the North, and the potential for Israeli casualties is far greater than the MOD will ever state.

Oh, and one last thing, Major General Eshel; by bombing Iran, you will also be bombing one of the oldest, continually practicing Jewish communities in the world, which have chosen to stay in their homeland, Iran, rather than immigrate to Israel.

How you, and the other war-hawks in Israel consider your Jewish brothers and sisters here as merely "collateral damage" in such a potential strike, just confounds me to the depth of my soul.
